WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

Workshop Proposals

Scope and Goal

The 2017 International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) Workshops provide a forum for a group of 20-50 participants to discuss topics in software engineering research and practice. ICSE Workshops serve as incubators for scientific communities that form and share a particular research agenda. ICSE Workshops also provide opportunities for researchers to exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference or journal publication.

ICSE 2017 Workshops may be either one or two days long and may be held before or after the main conference. Participation in ICSE workshops is typically open. ICSE 2017  workshops can produce workshop proceedings to be published in the IEEE Digital Library.

Evaluation Criteria

In evaluating the workshop proposals, special attention will be given to the following criteria (not strict rules, but guidelines):

  • The potential to advance the state of software engineering research and practice;
  • The expected interest and novelty in the workshop topics from the software engineering research community, as well as other relevant research communities from related disciplines;
  • The impact of the workshop in forging a new research community and create new collaborations;
  • The interactive nature of the workshop format (e.g., workshops stimulating discussions will be preferred to those based solely on papers presentations; workshops should strive not to be mini-conferences);
  • Special consideration will be given to proposals that have the potential to encourage participation by and increase visibility of software engineering researchers based in South America.

Additional criteria include:

  • The organizers' experience and ability to lead a successful workshop;
  • The balance and synergy with respect to other co-located ICSE 2017 events.

Proposal Submissions

Proposals must not exceed five pages in length, must follow the ICSE formatting and submission instruction and must include the following information, in the order specified:

4 pages

  • Workshop title
  • Brief abstract (less than 200 words) intended for the ICSE 2017 web site
  • Full contact information for all organizers of the workshop and main contact person
  • Motivation and Objectives
    • Motivation of the workshop's relevance to the field of software engineering.
    • Anticipated goals and outcomes of the workshop (e.g., open research problems to pursue, validation objectives, empirical studies).
  • Format and Required Services
    • Workshop format (e.g., paper presentations, keynotes, breakout sessions, panel-like discussions) and plans for generating and stimulating discussions.
    • Desired length of the workshop (i.e. 1 or 2 days).
    • Special services that are needed; logistic and/or equipment constraints.
  • Target Audience
    • Required background of the workshop attendees.
    • Whether a Mix of industry and research participants is being sought.
    • Desired minimum and maximum number of workshop participants, expected number of participants.
    • Participant solicitation and selection process, including whether the workshop will be open or closed.
  • Proceedings
    • How many and what type of contributions will be solicited (number of pages and type: extended abstracts, position and/or research papers, etc.).
    • Evaluation process that will be used to decide the acceptance of submissions.
    • A list of program committee members, including proposed and committed members.
    • Links to preliminary web site of the workshop and call for papers.
  • Workshop History
    • In case the workshop was previously held: number of registered attendees and web site for previous editions of the workshop.
  • Organizers' Bios
    • a brief description of each organizer's background, including relevant past experience in organizing conferences and workshops.

1 page

  • the call for submissions for the workshop.

All proposals must conform at time of submission to the ICSE 2017 formatting instructions, and must not exceed 4 pages, including all text, references, appendices and figures, plus 1 extra page for the draft call-for-submissions.
All proposals must be submitted electronically through the online submission site.

Workshop proposals must be submitted electronically by the deadline below under Important Dates.

For Accepted Workshops

For all accepted workshops, ICSE 2017 strongly recommends uniform deadlines for workshop papers submission, notification of authors, and camera-ready copies, as follows:

  • Workshop paper submissions due: Fri January 20th 2017
  • Notification to authors: Fri February 17th 2017
  • Camera-ready copies due: Mon February 27th 2017

Note that the Camera ready deadline is mandatory for those workshops that will opt for publication in the IEEE Digital Library.

Workshop papers must follow the ICSE 2017 formatting and submission instruction and must have a maximum length of 7 pages. It is not possible to pay for extra pages.

For workshops that will opt for publication in the IEEE Digital Library prior to the event, the call for submissions must include the following statement: “The official publication date of the workshop proceedings is the date the proceedings are made available in the IEEE Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of ICSE 2017. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.”

Conditions

ICSE 2017 will not pay for registration, travel, or other arrangements for workshop organizers or any of their invited speakers or guests. ICSE 2017 will also not pay for a workshop dinner.

Additionally, ICSE 2017 cannot guarantee to honor specific requests for holding the workshop on specific dates.

All participants, including workshop organizers, keynote speakers, and invited guests, must register for the workshop.

Workshop organizers cannot submit (refereed) papers to their own workshop.
